Either way, here are some things to think about!

If you are sticking it through the cold weather, here are some great bits of kit that will extend the amount of time you can spend in the water!

A 5mm wetsuit (minimum)
I use a 5/4 and it gets me through the whole winter without it being too cold. You can even get winter specific suits (6/5mm) that have hoods built in. When my suit needs upgrading, I will look at getting a hooded wetsuit to even further increase my time spent on the water.

Wetsuit hood or beanie
The single best thing you can wear to keep you warmer for longer. I personally prefer a hood over a beanie as it keeps your whole face warm and gives you the option to pull it down mid-session if needed. Something like these are great options - Hood or Beanie

Wearing boots and gloves keeps your head warm!
Keeping your extremities warm will keep the blood flowing, and generally help to make you feel much warmer.

Splash jacket (SUP/kayak specific)
If you spend most of the time out of the water, a splash jacket over the top of your wetsuit will keep the icy wind off you and helps keep you warm. I wouldn’t recommend using this if your water sport involves you being in and out of the water a lot, as they can fill with water making it a potential hazard. Alternatively, you can look at wetsuit hoodies which also keep the wind off but are fine when you get dunked in the water!

Dryrobe (or brand equivalent) for when you’ve come out of the water and need to warm up quickly
They’re great at keeping the chilly wind off you as you pack away. Also, great for any friends/partners you take with you - they’ll appreciate the warmth and might even take some photos from the shore while you’re out on the water!

Action plan for getting packed-up and warmed-up
- If you are lucky enough to be within a short drive to your house, get some waterproof seat covers and jump straight in the car and get to the shower ASAP.
- A hot flask of tea/coffee waiting for you always helps!
- Consider some re-usable instant hand warmers

If you’re more of a fair-weather enthusiast, here are some jobs that you could get done over the winter break:

Storage
Get your kit as dry as possible before putting it away. If you’ve been in sea water, make sure you’ve rinsed it with fresh water so the salt doesn’t corrode your kit. Use an old set of rags to give them a wipe if it won’t dry on its own. Any screws and fittings should also be rinsed and cleaned so they don’t get stuck in the board due to corrosion. This is ideally done after each session but crucial if packing away for while.

Repairs
For hard boards, this is the perfect time of year to get your gel coat repairs done. If you’ve never done gel coat or fibreglass repairs there are loads of great tutorials online. Here is an example of one for gel coat repairs https://youtu.be/6_Y1UavwhzI

Write a wish list in time for Christmas!

Hope this helps over the next few days!
